    St Andrews—Cesspool to Sanctuary
The impact of Sir Hugh Lyon Playfair

As noted in Alistair Beaton Adamson’s biography of Allan Robertson (Allan Robertson, Golfer: His Life and Times published by Grant Books) St Andrews, as we regard it today, wasn’t always a hospitable place for golf. Formally, golf was played at St Andrews for some time before Sir Robert Gordon’s book was published in the 17th century, The Earldom of Sutherland. In it, there is some of the earliest known documentary evidence, including reference to a license of January 25, 1552, granted by John Hamilton, “by the mercie of God archebishop of Sanctandros, primat et legat natie of the haill realme of Scotland” to the community of the city to rear rabbits…

One Club Jigger Challenge: May 17

Join us for our hickory golf event at Wing Point on Sunday, May 17th. This will be an eighteen hole, “one club” event using only the JIGGER. For those players who do not already own a jigger, we will be able to loan them one. Jigger golf is a VERY liberating way to enjoy the game…strolling around the course with only a single club is a wonderful feeling…as is learning to use it to hit shots from 5, to 50, to 130+ yards. We will be limited to 16 players for this event, with three of those as our hosts, Jeff Dean, Brian Pollack and John Lavendoski. Cost will be…

    Hickories Win Idaho Championship

For possibly the first time in 80-plus years, at least in Idaho, a club championship has been won by a player wielding a full set of hickory-shafted sticks. Tom Tracy, 69, of Star, won the senior club championship at River Birch Golf Club August 17-18 playing his hickories. Tracy, winner of the 2016 U.S. Hickory Open (senior division), fired 74-78 on the 6028-yard par-73 layout to win by three. “I decided to play hickories just for fun and to try to drum up some interest among other players. To my knowledge, nobody else in Idaho (other than my wife Sue) has caught the bug, and it would be great to…

Arthur Vernon Macan: Pacific NW Legend

The following article is from the Pacific Northwest Golf Association, who inducted Macan into their Hall of Fame in 1989. Every now and then, a personality emerges with such passion and conviction that he warrants being called a “renaissance man.” In Northwest golf circles, Arthur Vernon Macan was truly a renaissance man. Though he had considerable skills as a tournament golfer, Macan is best known for his brilliant golf course designs. Macan was born in Ireland. His eponymously-named father graduated from Dublin’s Trinity College with a degree in medicine in 1868. While serving in the Prussian Army as a field doctor, Macan Sr. learned advanced surgical techniques that would later…

Early History of Longview Country Club

Established 1923 Course Opened First Nine: 4-30-1927; Second Nine: 1958 Course Architect: 1927 – Francis L. James; 1958 – unknown A year before the City of Longview was incorporated, a group of businessmen met in the summer of 1923 to organize Cowlitz County’s first golf club: the Longview Golf and Country Club. The club initially planned its first golf course at the base of Mount Solo, just west of Longview. Given the primitive roads at the time, the distance proved to be too much, and those plans were dropped. They then decided on another course closer to the soon to be City, and a nine hole course was built on…
