2021 New Year’s Day Outing | Lynnwood GC

NWHP Board member, Roberta Robbins, has reserved six tee times at Lynnwood Golf Course, starting at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 1, 2021, for our special anniversary New Years Day outing.  The holiday rate is $33, though Premier Golf members may pay a little less.  Carts are available. The competition will be two-net-scores-per-foursome and we will collect $10 per player for the competition pot.  Lynnwood doesn’t accept tee times more than two weeks in advance, so precise starting times TBA. Lynnwood is in good shape right now, greens are great and it is a short course that is fun to play even in less than ideal conditions, like winter!  See you…

    Hickories Win Idaho Championship

For possibly the first time in 80-plus years, at least in Idaho, a club championship has been won by a player wielding a full set of hickory-shafted sticks. Tom Tracy, 69, of Star, won the senior club championship at River Birch Golf Club August 17-18 playing his hickories. Tracy, winner of the 2016 U.S. Hickory Open (senior division), fired 74-78 on the 6028-yard par-73 layout to win by three. “I decided to play hickories just for fun and to try to drum up some interest among other players. To my knowledge, nobody else in Idaho (other than my wife Sue) has caught the bug, and it would be great to…

Arthur Vernon Macan: Pacific NW Legend

The following article is from the Pacific Northwest Golf Association, who inducted Macan into their Hall of Fame in 1989. Every now and then, a personality emerges with such passion and conviction that he warrants being called a “renaissance man.” In Northwest golf circles, Arthur Vernon Macan was truly a renaissance man. Though he had considerable skills as a tournament golfer, Macan is best known for his brilliant golf course designs. Macan was born in Ireland. His eponymously-named father graduated from Dublin’s Trinity College with a degree in medicine in 1868. While serving in the Prussian Army as a field doctor, Macan Sr. learned advanced surgical techniques that would later…

Early History of Longview Country Club

Established 1923 Course Opened First Nine: 4-30-1927; Second Nine: 1958 Course Architect: 1927 – Francis L. James; 1958 – unknown A year before the City of Longview was incorporated, a group of businessmen met in the summer of 1923 to organize Cowlitz County’s first golf club: the Longview Golf and Country Club. The club initially planned its first golf course at the base of Mount Solo, just west of Longview. Given the primitive roads at the time, the distance proved to be too much, and those plans were dropped. They then decided on another course closer to the soon to be City, and a nine hole course was built on…

Niblick & Spoon: Read All About It

Niblick & Spoon – How the name and sign came to be… By Mark Persinger After a round at Jackson Park in Seattle, I was having a beer with my playing partners, a couple of brothers who were 85 years young, and former caddies during the hickory era of golf. We reclined in the café, in the new couch and TV area which had been recently set up, complete with an electric fireplace. I explained to the brothers that our GM, Kathy Wake, had added this area to give the café a sort of Irish bar feel, the first step to rebrand the café into a proper 19th hole. “Every…

The 1913 Professional International Match at Versailles

With the Ryder Cup being contested in France this year, it is a fitting time to reflect on a celebrated match pitting the UNITED STATES vs. FRANCE… The 1913 Professional International Match at Versailles It was pretty clear beforehand that the international match between sides of French and American professionals which had been carefully arranged between the French Association and the United States Golf Association would be a close thing and opinions differed as to the probable result. I think few people were prepared for the Americans losing everything as they did. The arrangement was that on Monday, June 30, and Tuesday there should be two four-ball matches and four…

    History: Chandler Egan’s
    Plantation Country Club
    Boise, ID

Golf was first introduced to Boise in 1900 by a group of golf enthusiasts who laid out six holes at Fort Boise, a federal army installation also known as Boise Barracks. From all indications this was an unflattering course, probably more akin to what we now know as a pitch and putt course. Nevertheless, it was golf, and by any measure this was a very early appearance of golf in the Northwest, and most likely the first in Idaho. Only a few golf clubs existed at that time in the Northwest states, most notably the Tacoma Golf Club (1894), the Seattle Golf Club (1896), the Country Club of Seattle (1896),…

    Classic Chapman – February 15

Join us for the 2020 Classic Chapman on Saturday, February 15. The outing will be held at The Classic Golf Club in Spanaway, Washington, and hosted by club member, Steve Malmquist. Individual closest to will be awarded on each of the par 3’s with a modest payout. The two lowest net scores will also receive a payout – the more players the less modest the payouts will be. The Chapman System is a two person team format, this is how it is played. Both players, A & B tee off — but player A goes to players B’s ball and plays the next shot. Player B does the same with…
