    Gamble Sands October 6-7, 2018

Don’t miss our 4th annual hickory championship at famed Gamble Sands. Saturday and Sunday, October 6-7, 2018 Situated high above the Columbia River, in North Central Washington, Gamble Sands is blessed with one of nature’s great locations and dramatic golf settings. Much like its older brothers and sisters in the linksland of Scotland, this beauty has 18 consecutive holes that were discovered – not constructed.   No matter the direction, views include the snow covered Cascade Mountains, thousands of acres of manicured apple and cherry orchards, multiple river vistas and mountains of black basalt.   Check out our photos here from prior year’s championships! Architect David McLay Kidd was selected from the…

    2015 California Hickory “North-South”: June 26-28

Hear-ye, hear-ye!  This much-anticipated annual event is a two-day hickory golf tournament to be held on the 1932 Chandler Egan designed Pacific Grove Golf Links.  Pacific Grove Golf Links is known as “the poor man’s Pebble Beach,” and for good reason.  The course is on the northwestern tip of the Monterey peninsula about five miles from Pebble Beach.  Pacific Ocean and Monterey Bay views are visible from almost every hole on the course, with the back nine is situated right along the coast in links style. A par 70 from just over 5,700 yards, this course is great for hickory play and very walkable.  Expect some attention from sight seers and passers by…

    Manton: Calcutta

It was in the city of Calcutta, that the first golf club outside the British Islands was established in 1829. To really appreciate the fact, one has to compare the year 1829 to the other happenings in the timeline of world golf. When the Royal Calcutta Golf Club was established, the Royal & Ancient Golf Club at St. Andrews was still five years away from seeing light of the day (however, the Society of St. Andrews Golfers had been formed in 1754). It would take another 19 years for gutta percha to replace the feathery ball and 22 years before the world would see the first professional golfer in the…

Arnaud Massy: A Frenchman with the soul of a Scot

He was the first non-Briton to win the Open Championship, the only Continental European to get his hands on the Claret Jug and win a major until Seve Ballesteros in 1979. Arnaud Massy was born July 6, 1877 in Biarritz, France, son of Bernard Massy a sheep farmer and his wife, Marie Lauga.  On leaving school Arnaud was employed as a sardine fisherman and from the age of fourteen caddied at Biarritz, for mostly English visitors to the Basque region. Massy was taught the rudimentary skills of club making by sixteen year old Willie Tucker when he was assistant to Willie Dunn at Biarritz.  (William H. Tucker Sr. was a…

    Harold Hilton: Modern Golf (1913)

BOOK REVIEW MODERN GOLF by Harold H. Hilton Outing Publishing Company, 1913 by Robert A. Birman I recently read Harold H. Hilton’s 1913 book, Modern Golf, and was enlightened and entertained with every passing chapter. Hilton was winner of the British Amateur three times at the turn of the 20th century (1900, 1901 and 1911), once winner of the American Amateur Championship and a two-time British Open champion in 1892 and 1897. I found myself midstream with three period pieces over the holidays this year; Harry Vardon’s The Complete Golfer, Horace Hutchinson’s Fifty Years of Golf, and Hilton’s so-called Modern Golf. I found myself putting down Vardon to finish both…

    June 15, 2015 – Rainier Country Club

When Rainier Golf & Country Club opened it’s first nine hole “golfing grounds” on September 15, 1920, it was considered one of the finest private “out-in-the-country golf links” in the Seattle Area.  Originally the course consisted of what is now the back nine and there was no clubhouse.  Bob Collins, the designer, builder, and first Golf Professional at Rainier, was quoted in the August 29, 1920 Post Intelligencer as having lined up 198 prepaid members and a long list of golfers awaiting his “golf instructional work.”   Rainier, the second oldest private golf club in Seattle, has matured and evolved into one of the most imaginative and demanding tests of golf in…

Fairwood has earned the reputation for having some of the purest putting surfaces in western Washington.  Undulated greens coupled with varying hole designs require a range of shots and players will often use every club…

    July 9, 2016 – Olympia Country Club

Famed golfer, Byron Nelson, once scored a 59 playing these links. He later returned for a nostalgic visit where he played such a fantastic game. When asked why he was back, he replied, “It was the only course I’ve shot 59 on!” Bud Ward, many time state and national amateur champion, started his golf career on our course. Established in 1914, and moved to its current location in 1926, it started as a nine-hole course.  Additional property was purchased in 1957 and the course was expanded to 18-holes.  A pro shop, swimming pool and deep water dock were built at that time.  The grounds are continuously upgraded with new drainage and…

    September 10, 2015 – The Home Course

The Home Course is about as good as modern public golf gets. Everything is super-sized–the fairways, greens, and bunkers are all at massive scale–which makes some sense for this course, to allow for the frequent winds off Puget Sound.  The Home Course is very playable for golfers of all skill levels, but still poses a significant test for low-handicap or scratch players. As a championship test, it’s as interesting as its sister, Chambers Bay, thanks to challenging green surrounds, and its scenery is almost as good.   The par 3′s in particular will definitely get your attention here.  The course features gentle elevation changes throughout the course, for the most part,…
